Schachenhaus
The King's House, built from plans by Georg Dollmann in 1869 to 1872 on the Schachen Alp near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, was King Ludwig II's mountain refuge in 1866 meters (5598 feet). The wooden post-and-infill structure in the form of a Swiss chalet has five living rooms downstairs with cembra wood panelling and a mixture of stylistic elements.
Very much in contrast to the plain and simple exterieur is the luxurious „Moorish Hall“ which is the entire upper floor of the hunting lodge. The visitor is greeted by a splendid array of colors in gold, red and blue. The turkish hall is furnished with divans and a fountain in the middle of the room.
On 25th August the king celebrated his birthday every year up there in the secluded mountain hideaway. It is long tradition that royalists, hikers and curious people are meeting for a memorial service on 25th August every year at he lodge. The 5 rooms on the bottom floor have a very special king of charm with their wooden paneled walls and historic elements.
The lodge can only be reached by foot via Elmau or through the Partnach Klamm in about 3 hours from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Not far from the the lodge there is a botanical garden with about 1500 different alpine flowers and plants.
