"Chiemgauer Wanderherbst" (Autumn hiking in the Chiemgau) with its myriad hiking trails usually rounds off the snow free part of the year in the Chiemgau. Advent is the season of Christmas markets far from the hustle and bustle of the state’s larger cities. Such small and intimate markets are the ideal places to pick up a few local handicrafts whilst listening to some traditional Christmas music. The Chiemgau is well known as a great venue for winter sports and regularly hosts such large-scale sporting events as the biathlon and speed skating world championships. Skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing and snow shoe hikes are all popular pastimes in this wonderful region.
